By 1968, the "Little GTO" of Ronnie and the Daytonas fame had grown from a wild hare of an idea from a marketer (Jim Wangers) and some engineers (Russell Gee and Bill Collins) into an American Icon that had launched the career of John DeLorean into a famous (and eventually infamous) trajectory.
The '68 Goat snapped the necks of gear heads everywhere with terrific new styling that just hollered "Wide-Track." The entire front end caused double-takes: a return to horizontal headlamps, a new dent resistant, color-coded poly-urethane front bumper made of something called "Endura" (a marketers term if ever there was one) and optional, vacuum operated, headlight covers. With those three big letters, GTO, affixed to the grill, there was NEVER any question that a '68 Goat was heading your way (or about to rocket past!)
Benchmark Classics, the Hot Rod, Custom, Specialty and Muscle Car playground in Madison, Wisconsin has a '68 Pontiac GTO that's "so cool it'll make you drool," to quote Barney Pipp a famous WCFL, Chicago Top 40 DJ of the era. Let's take a look:
- First off, this is a GTO convertible. There are few terms that evoke such instant response as, "It's a GTO convertible." But it gets even better...
- It has that great string of numbers that start with "4" that light up any hot rodder's heart: 4-barrel, 400 hundred cubic inch and 4-speed. From a performance standpoint, it would be hard to ask for more. For a collector, this is money: According to the authoritative experts at Pontiac Historic Services, there were only 3,116 of these original 4-speed '68 Pontiac GTO convertibles ever built. How many could be left? And how many of those have racked up just 66,150 miles.
- This is a numbers matching car with a well-detailed history, beginning with the original window sticker from Means Autos in Fort Wayne, Indiana listing the following options: That famous 4-speed (with a Hurst shifter,) HD rear axle, pushbutton AM/FM Eight Track Radio (that works), Rear seat speaker (GTO rear seat activity was certainly not restricted to just passengers), retractable headlamp covers (anyone who didn't order these just didn't get it,) Deluxe wheel discs, a center console and "Wonder Touch" power steering. It is also PHS documented!
- This drop top beauty has just been freshly painted by the pros at Benchmark in its original color of Aegena Blue (that's how GM spelled it, really.) It has been fitted with a new white convertible top and has a teal interior. Amazingly, while the dash has been replaced, the rest of the vinyl interior is absolutely original and in fabulous condition. And, for real thrill, check out the underside. Go ahead, crawl around and look at just how terrific a '68 GTO can look like from the bottom up! Just wonderful... It rolls on new "Redline" tires, just like it came from the factory in the autumn of 1967, a hot new Poncho that must have been the star of the showroom in Fort Wayne.
This is a special car. You can rip down the road, be a demon of the drive-ins, take it to the shows or just stick it in a special place in your garage and worship it. But it would be a shame not to put a few more miles on this Goat and discover (or re-discover) what really high performance driving was like when the Wide-Track Pontiacs ruled the known universe. And might I also encourage you to explore just how entertaining the back seat of a GTO can be on a warm summer night? After all, it does have that rear speaker and it would be a shame to waste all that space, eh?
Check out this wonderful 1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible at Benchmark Classics in Madison, WI. Someone's hot-rod heart is gonna start pounding when they see this lovely rocket. It won't be around long, so get to it.
